Investment cycle continues - Health system further strengthened with REACT-EU funding for Ljubljana Intermediate Care Department

Ljubljana, 4 March 2021 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has issued a funding decision for the project COVID-19 – Hospital renovation to extend capacities of Ljubljana Intermediate Care Department. The EUR 5.6 million project will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and supported by the European Regional Development Fund, with the contribution standing at EUR 4.5 million. This is already the second investment in a series of REACT-EU investments made under the massive NextGenerationEU instrument which helps EU countries recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Ljubljana Intermediate Care Department makes up an important player in the public health infrastructure, the building housing the department is only partly functional due to inefficient layouts and routing, inability to support newer medical technologies or offer needed care services in current hospital layout. With the funding provided under the project, comprehensive renovation of the premises will take place, as well as purchase and installation of modern medical equipment and technological solutions, which will make the hospital a safer, friendlier and more efficient place to work and stay in. Medical equipment and technology meeting the latest standards required for the provision of intermediate care services will be installed and provided, including state-of-the art hospital beds and equipment and devices used for physiotherapy, rehabilitation and occupational therapy.

A further EUR 50 million injection is shortly to be approved for a comprehensive renovation of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana premises, a project which will take two and a half years to complete and will be the largest investment made under the REACT-EU initiative in Slovenia.
