2014-2020 EU funds for drinking water supply in Suha krajina

Ljubljana, 31 August 2015 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, acting as the Managing Authority for European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, is continuing to issue grant award decisions for projects implemented under the 2014-2020 programming period. The Office issued a grant award decision for the investment “Drinking water supply in Suha krajina” which will ensure safe and healthy drinking water supply in the area. The project is worth EUR 36 million and will receive Cohesion Fund support in the amount of EUR 20.8 million.

The investment will address the issue of drinking water supply in the municipalities Dobrepolje, Dolenjske Toplice, Mirna Peč, Kočevje and Žužemberk. The project covers upgrading and hydraulic improvements of the existing water supply system and connecting inhabitants to the new public water supply network as well as ensuring new drinking water sources and thus safe and healthy drinking water supply.

The project covers the construction of 152,085 metres of pipelines, 7 pumping stations (5 pumping stations will be newly constructed and 2 will be upgraded), 16 water reservoirs, 16 relief shafts, 18 reducing shafts and 11 measuring shafts. Due to the occasional unsafe drinking water supply, insufficient capacities of the water supply system and the lack of adequate connections 5 new water sources will be included with hydraulic improvements of the existing water supply system. This will establish an overall drinking water supply system in the mentioned municipalities. In addition to connecting inhabitants to the new public water supply system and improving the quality of drinking water supply and the living conditions for the inhabitants, the project will also contribute to reducing water losses.
