EU funds for national cloud computing infrastructure

Ljubljana, 15 September 2014 – Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, acting as the Managing Authority for EU Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a grant award decision for the establishment of a national cloud computing infrastructure, owned and managed by the state. The infrastructure will support delivery of services which deal with sensitive, personal and other data and information which the government wants to retain within its environment. The value of the investment amounts to a good 14.4 million euros of which the European Regional Development Fund contribution amounts to a little over 12.2 million euros.

By introducing cloud computing, direct budget users will be able to achieve their business objectives in a faster a more cost-efficient manner. The project represents a contribution to simplifying and rationalising the procedures related to the development and maintenance of IT systems as well to enhancing the effectiveness of national authorities. The information and communication infrastructure will also enable national authorities to establish sectoral IT platforms. By doing so, the national authorities will be able to realise the provisions of the European Union Directive on re-use of public sector information, as well as meet the requirements regarding the acceleration of opening such data, establishing the environment to facilitate implementation and support e-services, namely by using open data and services which do not only become re-usable but also available to small and medium-sized enterprises and innovators in their efforts to create innovative solutions.

National authorities (state and public administration) will act as primary users of the national cloud computing infrastructure while citizens, companies and the ICT industry will act as secondary users.

For more information please contact the Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for the implementation of the project.
