EU funds for Slovenian metrology system

Ljubljana, 29 November 2013 – Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, acting as the Managing Authority for EU structural funds and the Cohesion Fund, issued a decision awarding funds for the project “Metrology system infrastructure – ionising radiation”. The value of the project, which will be implemented by the Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia and which will contribute to the modernisation of the Slovenian metrology system in the field of ionising radiation, amounts to 120,000 euros. The European Regional Development Fund will contribute 85 per cent of the value or 102,000 euros.

The investment includes the purchase of the calibration system for the equipment for measuring mammographic x-ray spectrums as a complement to the national etalon for dosimetry quantities and quantities for radiation protection. The equipment will enable the transfer of measurement values from the national etalon to the measuring equipment in the field of medicine which will expand the extent of transfer of measurement values to the fields where measurements are currently not carried out.

Thus, the implementation of calibration in Slovenia will contribute to greater efficiency in this area, decreased costs of transportation and enable faster results of measurements. The improved reliability of the operation of the laboratory and faster calibration of mammograms will contribute to decreasing the mortality rate.

Expanding the support for the development-research activity with the help of the ionising radiation is important also for acquiring additional national, regional and international projects.
